Dehumidifiers & Air Handling Units

Dehumidifiers are essential in any indoor swimming pool. Warm pool water constantly evaporates into the air, driving humidity levels up. Without proper control, that moisture condenses on windows, ceilings, steelwork and hidden cold surfaces inside the building. Over time this leads to peeling paint, rotting timbers, corrosion of metalwork, mould growth and a generally uncomfortable, “clammy” environment for swimmers and spectators. A correctly sized and set up dehumidifier keeps humidity in a safe range, protecting the building fabric and finishes while making the air feel far more comfortable.

Most modern pool dehumidifiers work on the same basic refrigeration/air conditioning cycle that heat pumps and AC units use. Moist, warm air from the pool hall is drawn through the unit and passed over a cold evaporator coil. As the air cools below its dew point, moisture condenses on the coil and drains away as condensate. The now-drier air is then reheated as it passes over the hot condenser coil and returned to the room. In some systems, recovered heat can also be used to help warm the air or even top up the pool water temperature, improving overall efficiency.

Wall-mounted dehumidifier units installed in commercial indoor pool changing area

At Sussex Heat Pumps Ltd we install, service and repair dehumidifiers specifically designed for indoor pools and associated plant rooms. On a typical service we’ll check the refrigeration circuit, fans and airflow, clean coils and filters, test condensate drains, verify humidity sensor readings and confirm that setpoints and control strategies are appropriate for the space. We also look for signs of corrosion or water damage around the unit and ductwork so issues can be picked up early. If a fault does occur, we can diagnose and repair problems with compressors, fans, controls and refrigerant leaks, always working in line with F-Gas requirements.

Not sure what size dehumidifier you need?

Try our Indoor Pool Dehumidifier Calculator to get an estimated litres-per-day capacity based on your pool size, water temperature and how you use the pool hall.
